OBJECTIVE: The present study evaluated the doses received by companions who had shared therapeutic rooms with patients undergoing treatment with 131-iodine (131I). The results were compared with the limits established by the Brazilian radiation protection regulatory standard. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six pairs of persons (a patient and a companion sharing a same therapeutic room) were evaluated. Still, other 23 experiments were accomplished with a phantom replacing the companion. The therapeutic 131I activities given to the patients corresponded to 3700 MBq or 5550 MBq. Powdered lithium fluoride thermoluminescent dosimeters doped with magnesium, titanium and sodium were utilized for evaluating the doses. RESULTS: The results demonstrate that a person sharing a same therapeutic room, for two days, with a patient who had been given 3700 MBq or 5550 MBq of 131I, according to radioprotection recommendations, is exposed to a mean dose of (0.51 ± 0.02) mSv for a 99% confidence level. CONCLUSION: According to the Brazilian radiation protection standards there is no impediment for a person to accompany a nuclear medicine patient who has been given 3700 MBq or 5550 MBq of 131I during the patient stay in the therapeutic room.

OBJECTIVE: Several methods are utilized for determining the radioiodine activity in the treatment of Graves' disease (hyperthyroidism). Some of this methods do not take into consideration the thyroid absorbed dose or the necessary parameters for this estimation. The association between absorbed dose and administered activity depends on effective half-life, iodine uptake and thyroid mass of each patient. The present study was aimed at developing a methodology for individualized 131I therapy for Graves' disease in patients with hyperthyroidism of the Graves' disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A neck-thyroid phantom developed at Instituto de Radioproteção e Dosimetria, containing a standard solution of 131I, was utilized for calibrating the scintillation gamma camera and uptake probe installed in the Department of Nuclear Medicine of the Hospital Universitário Clementino Fraga Filho da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. RESULTS: The view angle of the collimator/detector assembly presented values compatible with the thyroid gland size for distances of 25 cm (uptake probe) and 45.8 cm (scintillation gamma camera). Calibration factors were 39.3 ± 0.78 and 4.3 ± 0.17 cpm/kBq, respectively. The 14-30-hour interval in the retention curve allows the estimation of activity between two points for determining the effective iodine half-life in the thyroid. CONCLUSION: The utilization of equipment usually available in nuclear medicine clinics is feasible, so this is a simple, effective and low cost methodology.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the persistency of foramen of Huschke by means of computed tomography study of the ear region and approaching important clinical aspects related to the presence of this anatomical anomaly. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two examiners have analyzed the whole tympanic portion of temporal bone in 150 bilateral computed tomography studies of the ear region, searching for foramen of Huschke presence or absence. RESULTS: The mentioned anatomical anomaly was found in 17 cases (11.3%), 13 patients (76.5%) being female and four (23.5%) male. This higher female incidence is statistically confirmed. CONCLUSION: Ear and/or temporomandibular joint specialists should turn their attention to the persistency of foramen of Huschke.

Radioiodine therapy has attained a significant role in the treatment of differentiated thyroid cancer. The literature addressing possible secondary effects of 131I is limited, although there has been increasingly interest in this field. A more comprehensive understanding of the mutagenic effects of radiation on the offspring of women exposed to 131I is mandatory in view of the possibility of occurrence of miscarriages, congenital abnormalities and malignancies in these children. In this review, we found that many reports on safety of this type of treatment in female patients in reproductive age recommend that pregnancy should be avoided for at least one year after therapeutic administration of radioiodine.
